Jersey City is known for its rich culture, diverse communities, and vibrant nightlife. Among its many hidden gems is Barcade, a unique spot that combines beer and vintage arcade games. Located at 163 Newark Ave, Jersey City, NJ 07302, Barcade has been a favorite hangout for locals and visitors alike, with glowing reviews to support. However with changing trends and challenges facing small businesses, Barcade needs our support now more than ever. Here’s why you should pay this iconic venue a visit.
A Trip Down Memory Lane
Barcade isn’t just a bar; it’s a nostalgic experience. Walking into this video game-themed venue feels like stepping back in time to the golden era of arcades. With its carefully curated lineup of vintage arcade machines, you can try your hand at classics like Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Street Fighter. The buzzing atmosphere and retro decor make it a haven for gamers and nostalgia seekers.
Barcade first opened its doors in 2004, as one of the original pioneers of the bar-and-arcade hybrid concept. Founded in Brooklyn, it quickly expanded to Jersey City in 2011, where it became a beloved staple of the nightlife scene. Over the years, it has attracted countless visitors with its unique blend of entertainment and craft beer.
Craft Beers and Good Times
Beyond the games, Barcade is renowned for its impressive selection of craft beers. The rotating taps feature a mix of local brews and unique options from across the country, catering to beer enthusiasts of all tastes. Pair your drink with a game of pinball or Tetris, and you have the recipe for a perfect night out.

Community and Challenges
Barcade has long been a staple of Jersey City’s nightlife, offering a space where friends can gather, unwind, and create lasting memories. However, like many small businesses, it faces challenges in a competitive market and evolving consumer habits. After 14 years of serving the community, Barcade is sadly set to close its doors on June 15, 2025.
In a heartfelt statement shared on their Facebook page, the owners announced, “After an amazing 14-year run, our lease is ending and the last day of service will be June 15th. We hope to return to JC one day in a new location but in the meantime, we are opening very soon just a short train ride away on Cortlandt Street in lower Manhattan this spring and we hope you will visit us there – or at any of our other bars.”
This marks the end of an era, but there’s still time to show support and celebrate everything this venue has brought to Jersey City.
Why Barcade Matters to Jersey City

Barcade represents more than just a night out; it’s a testament to Jersey City’s unique character. In a city that’s increasingly attracting residents looking for an alternative lifestyle, venues like Barcade showcase the charm and personality that make Jersey City a destination in its own right. Supporting local businesses like Barcade not only preserves the city’s culture but also enhances its appeal to new residents and visitors.
