Oh boy, it’s BBQ season! Time to dust off your grill, round up your friends, and get ready to feast on some tasty meats, veggies, and drinks. With the recent passing of Memorial Day and the upcoming July 4th celebrations, now is the perfect time to get your backyard or your terrace ready for the perfect summer BBQ. If you’re not sure on where to start when creating the perfect summer BBQ, fear not! I’ve got some tips to help you out.
1. Prep Your Backyard/Terra
Before you start grilling, make sure your backyard is in tip-top shape. Clear any debris or clutter, mow the lawn, and maybe even add some outdoor decorations to set the mood. A few fairy lights, some colorful lanterns, or a quirky banner can make all the difference. You can also add some decorations such as outdoor string lights, lanterns, or even a banner that says “Happy July 4th” or “Summer BBQ.”
2. Set up Your Grilling Station
The grill is the centerpiece of any summer BBQ, so make sure to set up a station where you can easily cook and serve food. If you don’t have a grill, consider investing in a high-quality one that fits your needs and budget. Make sure to have all the necessary tools and accessories such as tongs, spatulas, a meat thermometer, and a basting brush.
3. Plan Your Menu
Next, plan out your menu for the day. Think about what dishes you want to serve and what ingredients you need to buy. For Jersey City and the surrounding tri-state area, you can never go wrong with classic BBQ favorites like hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, and ribs. You can also add some regional flair with local favorites such as pork roll, corn on the cob, and tomato pies. But, don’t forget something for the vegetarians!
4. Stock Up On Drinks and Snacks
Thirsty guests are not happy guests, so make sure you have a variety of drinks on hand. Beer, wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic options are all good choices. As for snacks, go for some crowd-pleasers like chips and guacamole, veggies and hummus, or cheese and crackers. And if you really want to impress your guests, whip up some homemade salsa or a signature cocktail.
5. Create a Seating Area
Make sure to create a comfortable seating area for your guests to relax and enjoy their food. Consider adding some outdoor furniture such as chairs, tables, and a patio umbrella. You can also set up some games or activities such as cornhole, horseshoes, or a frisbee.

6. Don’t Forget the Music
Finally, set the mood with some upbeat and festive music. Create a playlist that features some classic summer tunes. You can also ask your guests for song requests and let them take turns playing DJ.
With these tips, you’re well on your way to creating the perfect summer BBQ. Just remember to have fun, stay safe, and enjoy the beautiful weather with your friends and family! And if you’re in the Hudson County area, I’ll be waiting for my invite!
