When finding a new home with your furry little friend, it is crucial  to consider these three important factors that can affect your home search. There are certain limitations that come with owning a pet, especially when it comes to renting a home. So before you start your search, here are three factors you must consider when finding a home as a pet owner.

1. Are You Buying or Renting?

The first factor to consider is whether you’re buying or renting. If you’re buying a home, then it is an easier process because there are very few places that don’t allow pets, e.g. some coops, a few condos and some communities but in general, most places will be pet friendly. However, if you’re renting, then there are some places that won’t allow pets. Be sure to ask your real estate agent about the restrictions on pets. Some places would allow cats, some places would allow dogs less than 20 lb, so be on the lookout when looking! Make sure to do your research ahead of time so that you don’t waste your time looking at places that won’t allow your pet.

2. How Big is Your Pet?

The second factor to consider is the size of your pet. If you have a large dog, then you’re going to need a yard for them to run around in. If you have a smaller pet, then an apartment might be just fine. Or maybe you want a nice big window with a view so that your cat can stare out and people watch. These are all things you can bring up to your agent so that they can keep your furry little friend in mind! Just make sure that whatever property you’re looking at has enough space for your pet to be comfortable.

3. Is the Community “Pet-Friendly”?

Finally, you’ll want to make sure the community you’re moving into is pet-friendly. This means there are plenty of places to walk your dog and that your neighbors are also pet-owners who are welcoming to newcomers. Are there a lot of pet services available in your area? For example, Jersey City is home to a plethora of pet sitting services as well as dog walking services. Maybe this is something to consider when it comes to your choice in a home.

Buying or renting, the size of your pet, and the pet-friendly community are all important factors to consider when finding a new home as a pet owner. Do your research ahead of time and find a place that’s comfortable for both you and your pet. And when all is said and done, don’t forget to update the address on your pet’s collar!
