Historical Background

Downtown Jersey City lies within what was once the Dutch settlement of Pavonia, established in the 1630s under the New Netherland colony. This area played a key role in the region’s industrial growth in the 19th and early 20th centuries, especially around the Harborside and Powerhouse areas.

The neighborhood’s rail terminals, warehouses, and ferry stations once served thousands of immigrants and commuters daily. While much of that infrastructure has been redeveloped, reminders of this past remain — like the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad Powerhouse and restored brownstones around Van Vorst and Hamilton Parks.

Notable Historic Sites:

  • Powerhouse Arts District – Named for the iconic Hudson & Manhattan Powerhouse (1908), now a historic preservation site
  • Grace Church Van Vorst – A Gothic Revival church built in 1853
  • Van Vorst Park and Hamilton Park – Two landmark green spaces surrounded by preserved 19th-century homes
