Historical Background
Downtown Jersey City lies within what was once the Dutch settlement of Pavonia, established in the 1630s under the New Netherland colony. This area played a key role in the region’s industrial growth in the 19th and early 20th centuries, especially around the Harborside and Powerhouse areas.
